Lecture on Typology
Typology is the comparison between unrelated languages that are not in contact with each other. Such comparisons show that certain patterns recur in language after language. For instance, across languages object-subject-verb is exceedingly rare as unmarked constituent order. Typologists do not simply collect such facts, but try to find explanations for them.
